WHITEHAVEN, TN (WMC) - A Memphis police officer was taken to Regional Medical Center after being shot in the leg in Whitehaven on Thursday afternoon. He is now recovering at home.

Organized Crime Unit officer Robert Armour, 32, was escorted by fellow officers as an ambulance rushed him to the hospital. He was shot while responding to a complaint of drug or gang activity in the 900 block of Hester Road.

"When you get this phone call, it ruins your day," said MPD Director Toney Armstrong. "This is a reminder of how dangerous this job is."

For Armstrong and other officers, putting your life on the line is not a phrase, but a stark reality.

In September 2014, an MPD veteran of 20 years, Elgin Lee, was shot on Mt. Olive Street while he was off-duty.

This time around, Officer Armour was on duty, but in plain clothes.

Armstrong said Armour was in his car following the suspect when the suspect stepped out of his car and opened fire.

"He identified himself as a police officer, suspect immediately began firing multiple shots at him," Armstrong said.

Armour arrived at the hospital in critical condition, but was upgraded to stable condition. He is expected to make a full recovery.

MPD officers showed up to the hospital in droves, hoping the best for their comrade.

Armstrong revealed that Armour has two children, ages 1 and 2 years old. He has been employed with Memphis Police Department for 8 1/2 years.

Daniel Jefferson is charged in the shooting. Relatives say he ran to his mom's house on Kirkwood Road after it happened.
