SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC) - Southaven residents were given the chance to safely turn themselves in on Tuesday if they had a bench warrant issued for their arrest.

If these individuals were able to pay a predetermined amount towards what they owed to the court, the warrant was lifted, and they were put on a payment plan for the rest.

If they were unable to pay,  the judge decided their eligibility in the program.

"Today I have seen a more willingness and welcoming from police then I have ever seen before," said Freddie Otis. "I feel great about it."

Lieutenant Mark Little says the program began three years ago. He says over the years they have helped hundreds settle their payments without ending up back in jail.

"We have two people that came from 6 and 8 hours away because they had a warrant on their record and couldn't get a job," said Little. "It's just a chance to get it behind them."

The safe surrender program will continue on Thursday from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m.
