MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A Germantown police officer was arrested and charged with rape and sexual assault charges.

Officer James Kensinger was suspended with pay during the investigation. He has worked with GPD since August 2005.

Kensinger is accused of assaulting a woman he knew.

Kensinger's brother approached WMC Action News 5's team defending his younger brother.

Kensinger was hired by the Germantown Police Department on August 31, 2005 and worked under the uniform patrol division. He is out of jail on bond.

His brother would not make a direct comment on the situation .

The police report says Kensinger pulled the woman into a house, ripped off her clothes, and raped her as she screamed for him to stop.

A nurse who examines sexual assault victims noted bruises on the victim's body and private areas.

A neighbor that lives a few houses down says it's terrifying to hear a woman say she was raped in his neighborhood.

"I mean I think that it's kind of shocking," neighbor Kerry Petty said. "I mean if someone who's supposed to be protecting us--to go and rape somebody. It doesn't make any sense to me at all."

The Germantown Police department will not comment on the open investigation.

Officer Kensinger has been suspended with pay.

In 2008, Germantown Chief Richard Hall presented Police Officer James Kensinger with the Life Saving Award for saving a teen's life .
