MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A familiar sound is coming back to downtown streets. But the sound doesn't match the sight.

Wednesday MATA announced a temporary bus service, complete with trolley bells, will hit the trolley line along Main Street beginning Sunday, April 12.

“Everyone wants the trolleys to come back, but most importantly, we want to be ready for this new season,” said Ron Garrison, MATA President and General Manager.

The three buses will run to the Main Street mall every 15 minutes to transport people visiting the new Bass Pro Pyramid, Memphis in May, and other summer festivals.

"It's convenient, especially with the students here. To be able to get from the convention center, to downtown, to places to eat, and see some sites while we're here," Memphis visitor Melissa Ferrell said.

Ferrell is visiting Memphis this week with several musicians. They were all hoping to hop on the trolley, but say buses will do the same thing.

The buses will run right along the tracks on Main Street, but many wonder if it will cause damage to the tracks.

“The cobblestones really don't support buses or vehicles, so we will have to do some repairs to the mall in preparation for bringing the trolleys back once we take the buses off the mall. We're hoping that's sooner as opposed to later,” explained Garrison.

And the answer to the million dollar question: when will the trolley be back on the tracks?

“We're hoping to bring the trolleys back one at a time, faster and faster, starting this fall,” said Garrison.

But for the next few months, riders will have to settle for a bus, with a trolley bell.
