MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Candidates continue to throw their hats in the ring for the Memphis mayoral race.

Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins says he's running for the city's top spot.

Collins joins fellow council member Jim Strickland, Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams, Shelby County Commissioner Justin Ford, Brian Saulsberry, as well as incumbent mayor A C Wharton in the race.

On Wednesday, Collins laid out what he would do as Memphis mayor.

"We have to have swift and severe punishment when crime is committed. And secondly, we have the backpack or the goal to then introduce those people who commit crimes into alternative things," Collins said.

Memphis voters will decide who will lead the city on October 8.
