A Memphis woman is behind bars, accused of neglecting her 94-year-old mother, whose foot was described as looking like a "mummy's foot" when she was finally brought to the doctor's office.

Investigators say Freda Jennings, 61, neglected her mother by refusing to give her mother medical care and leaving her to live in squalor.

According to the police report, Jennings and her mom lived at a home in the 500 block of East McLemore Avenue. It has since been condemned. Signs forbidding anyone from entering are posted on the door.

The investigation into negligence started at Methodist University Hospital when Jennings' mother arrived for medical treatment. Doctors say the woman's foot was black and looked like a "mummy foot."

But, neighbors have a different perspective on what was going on next door.

"She has been taking care of her mom for many, many years," said a neighbor, who asked to be identified as Mr. Flowers.

Flowers says Jennings was always very attentive toward her mother and may not have had enough outside support to help with her care.

"I have never seen any other family members care or help her with her mom," Flowers added.

Jennings' bond is set at $15,000.
