MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A dog saved from a drainage ditch now needs a permanent home.

Memphis firefighters pulled the dog to safety over the weekend and the video went viral.

"He survived," one Memphian said. "He needs a home. He survived."

The dog is a female pit bull terrier mix. She is now at Memphis Animal Shelter.

By law, the shelter can put down animals a few days after they arrive, but that's not going to be the case for this lucky pup.

"That pet is up for adoption," James Rogers, animal shelter director, said. "[We're] trying to find it a new forever home. We will continue to do that until we are successful."

Rogers says it is common for the shelter to find homes for animals. He says the dog will be ready for adoption by Friday.

The rightful owner of the dog has not come forward. Animal shelter workers say she appears to have been someone's pet because she's friendly and has no problem walking on a leash.

"If somebody has a heart to save the dog, then it should be saved," neighbor Yolanda Rooks said.
