COLLIERVILLE, TN (WMC) - The woman who Collierville police say stabbed and killed her boyfriend during a fight over a cellphone is out of custody.

David Antell, who lives next door, says he ran to the house because his child was attending a sleepover where the stabbing happened on Wednesday night.

Antell's child was fast asleep at the home in the 400 block of Center Street when the deadly fight broke out between Brenda Church and her boyfriend, Xavier Jones.

"I wanted to make sure the kids were OK, so I went over there and tried to get the kids but they were all asleep still," he said.

Antell said police officers kept the kids inside a room while they cleaned up the crime scene.

Investigators say Church stabbed Jones once in the leg with a kitchen knife during an argument. Antell claims Church was protecting herself.

"They're good people. I mean they help us out, we help them out. It's just sad what happened," Antell explained. "I'm glad she was able to defend herself, but you hate that it went down this way."

Collierville police officers cannot say yet whether the stabbing was justified. The case may go to a grand jury to decide.

Neighbors couldn't believe what happened after most went to sleep on Wednesday night. This street is described as normally quiet and uneventful, but that was not the case when Ashley Juengling looked out her 10-month-old baby's bedroom window.

"I was shocked, actually found out this morning," said neighbor Ashley Juengling. "I just randomly got up to check on him [her child] because he's been sick and his room was covered in blue lights."

No one at the house where the fight happened wanted to speak with WMC Action News 5, but neighbors are still shaken up.

"I've been our here about four years, it's very quiet. It's a disturbing thing that happened last night, that's all," Antell said.

Despite Church not facing charges at this time, it is possible she could face charges at a later date.
