Memphis Fire Department is beginning city-wide inspections to ensure that you and your loved ones are safe in the event of an emergency.

According to MFD, crews will be assigned to parts of Memphis to canvass door-to-door for smoke detectors, conduct building surveys, and check fire hydrants. These procedures are part of a new Fire Management Zone plan to ensure that all parts of the city are safe.

On April 11, crews will begin checking and "flushing" fire hydrants. In a written statement, MFD Director Michael Putt said hydrant flushing ensures the devices are in working condition and have adequate available water flow and pressure.

MFD officials say during April and May, residents in areas where crews are working may see a temporary decrease in water pressure. However, each hydrant will only be flushed for a few minutes, so water pressure should not be affected in the long term.
