The Memphis Black Expo and Empowerment Conference started Thursday at Agricenter International.

WMC Action News 5 team members joined celebrity guests Hosea Chancez, Omar Tyree, and Traci Braxton as they greeted guests.

The event continues Sunday.

Show director Viara Boyd of V-Rock Productions says she was created the expo to evoke social, cultural and economic change.

“The Memphis Black Expo is planned in such a way, that every event is designed to help, educate and empower the black community,” Boyd said. “Black people, black lives matter is becoming more visual and the attitude of black people in this country is changing. People are becoming more socially aware and that includes buying power, history, culture, generational wealth…this is why events like MBX are important.”

Since 2008 and 700 guests, the expo has evolved into a five day show with more than 20,000 guests and 250-300 vendors every year.  "MBX continues to focus on and highlight small, black owned businesses but also raises cultural awareness, encourages cultural curiosity, social consciousness, cooperative economics, and generational wealth, all while creating an atmosphere where families can have fun," explained the event's founders.
