Police are investigating a shooting that involved a Memphis police officer on Friday evening.

According to MPD, officers found a car that matched the description of the suspect's vehicle from the drive-by shooting that killed 7-year-old Kirsten Williams on Durby Circle.

Officers followed the car from the 2200 block of Airways Boulevard to a nearby Budget Host Inn and Suites. At that point, suspect Eric Williams reportedly jumped out of the car and ran through the motel.

Two other people stayed in the car and were taken into custody.

An officer said he chased Williams and saw him reach into his waistband, pulling out what appeared to be a gun and pointing it at him. At that time, the officer fired several shots at the suspect, hitting him once.

Williams was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition and was later released. At that point, he was taken to jail.

Williams is charged with simple assault and had two outstanding warrants for aggravated assault and traffic incidents.

It is unclear whether Williams or the other two occupants of the vehicle were involved in the shooting on Durby Circle. It is also unclear whether the suspect actually had a weapon.
