A hit and run accident caused major traffic delays and power outages east of Memphis International Airport on Monday morning.

Neighbors were amazed that nobody was injured when a car hit a tractor-trailer, sending it crashing into a utility pole at the intersection of Winchester Road and Bishop Bridge Road. The driver of the car drove away from the accident scene.

The broken utility pole left more than 4,000 MLGW customers without power in the Oakhaven community.

Memphis police officers directed traffic as MLGW crews worked to remove the downed power lines.

The truck driver's wife told WMC Action News 5's Jerica Phillips that her husband was not seriously hurt. She said he is a military veteran and went to the hospital to be checked out.

Thomas Dodson lives across the street from the crash and said he knows the truck driver.

"He's an excellent driver and I've known him for 25 years or longer," said Dodson. "I'm sure if he could have avoided it he would have avoided it."

Dodson, who also drives trucks, warns drivers to be more careful.

"These people in cars are going to have to slow down and be a little bit more professional and considerate of tractor trailer rigs," he said. "They [trucks] cannot stop on a dime."

Memphis police have not said whether the driver of the car is in custody or whether he/she will face charges.
