Chicago (WMC) -

Veterinarians across the country are worried about an outbreak of dog flu happening in Chicago, Illinois.

More than 1,000 dogs have gotten sick, but researchers say there is something even more concerning. The strain of dog flu hitting these pups is one that's never been seen in the United States.

Dogs that catch the strain come down with coughing, runny noses, and fevers.

"I'm concerned about my dog's health quite naturally," dog owner Verna Neely said.

Veterinarians say the current dog flu outbreak has killed five dogs.

Vets and technicians at some Chicago clinics are already using protective clothing to stop the virus from spreading.
