ARVADA, CO (KUSA) -

An 80-year-old woman who always had a knack for numbers is building confidence with letters at a senior spelling bee competition.

When Pat Thoennes lost her husband of 50 years, she was as lonely as she was shy.

"I felt in the past, that I wasn't important," Thoennes said.

But when a trio of new friend stepped in to her life, she found new confidence.

"I'm the happiest I've been for a long time," she added.

With that new confidence, Thoennes decided to sign up for the Senior Spelling Bee at a community rec center.

"I thought about it for one day. I said, 'I'm going to do it. I might go down on the first word. I don't care. I'm going to do it."

As she somewhat predicted, Thoennes lost on her very first word: chaos.

But, she found reason to celebrate.

"I was just happy I did it," she said as she made plans to do it again. "But, I'll be here, God willing, and if I go down on the first word, so be it."
