MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

In the wake of several devastating shootings in Memphis, Mayor A C Wharton is pledging to help police officers fight crime.

Wharton says the Memphis Police Department could receive an extra $5 million under a new budget proposal he plans to submit to City Council next week.

Wharton also wants to reinstate Police Service Technicians to free up resources by handling minor traffic situations and similar incidents.

However, Wharton admits throwing money at the problem is not the only solution. He says there are several factors that need to be addressed before violence in the city subsides.

"I dare say, by a miracle, even if we could bring in another 300 officers overnight, it would not resolve all of this," Wharton explained.

Wharton says that because police cannot be everywhere at once, responsibility also lies with parents and the community as a whole to keep children in line and discipline troublemakers appropriately.
