A Shelby County sheriff's deputy is under investigation after he was reportedly found drunk behind the wheel of a car.

Some residents are concerned about the deputy's arrest.

"They are supposed to protect and serve our community and they shouldn't be out there doing the crime," said concerned resident Amy Green.

According to Shelby County Sheriff's Office, an officer noticed a car that had remained stopped at the busy intersection of Macon Road and Germantown Parkway through two green light cycles at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

When the officer went to investigate, he found 27-year-old John Checchia asleep at the wheel. His car was in gear and his foot was on the brake pedal.

The officer said he put the car in park before waking Checchia, who smelled strongly of alcohol.

"He could have had an accident and killed somebody, or somebody could have killed him," said resident Patrick Sanders.

Checchia failed two sobriety tests, and was charged with DUI and refusal to submit to a test.

Those who live in the area where the arrest happened say the only way drunk driving will stop is if even those with a gun and a badge get in trouble.

"If it was me, I'd be locked up, license suspended," said Sanders. "They should have the same thing."

Checchia, who was hired to the sheriff's office in 2012, was relieved of duty with pay while SCSO investigates the situation.
