MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police are searching for a suspected rapist wanted for carjacking a woman from the Mill Creek Apartments in Whitehaven before sexually assaulting her at a second location.

Data shows this was not an isolated incident; there are an alarming number of similar crimes city-wide.

"The world's just really scary," said complex resident Regina Jackson.

She and others are still perplexed by the crime.

"It could be 6:30 in the morning, 6:30 in the afternoon," said Jackson.  "It's just dangerous, and these crimes need to stop."

Police say a woman was attacked as she sat in her car on the other side of the complex's security gates.  She was raped in the area of Auburn and Craft roads before the suspect drove away.

It's a nightmare 329 other victims have experienced in the last year according to MPD statistics WMC Action News 5 investigators poured over.  There were seven and five rapes, respectively, in wards 224 and 225 where the Whitehaven woman's attack began and ended.

The most forcible rapes from April of 2014 to April of this year occurred in ward 321, which runs along Lamar Avenue north of the airport.  There were 17 reported rapes there.

The fewest number of reported rapes, only one, occurred in ward 821. That's in East Memphis, just west of I-240.

One rape is too many according to neighbors who live where the most recently publicized crime occurred.

"Because we got kids and everything over there," said Neikeisha Bady. "And that don't make no sense, people getting raped and we live over there."

The Whitehaven victim's white Nissan is still missing.  It's a white, 4 door, 1998 Nissan Maxima with TN tag S7116D.  She told police
the suspect was between 20 and 25 with a stocky build and dark complexion last seen wearing a blue hoodie and black pants.
