LAKELAND, TN (WMC) -

Lakeland voters finally took their stance on a $50 million bond issue for a new prep school.

After saying yes to municipal schools two years ago, voters said no to the prep school Thursday.

According to unofficial totals posted at precinct locations, 2,157 people voted against the bond, while only 1,429 voted in favor.

The issue was over the funding of a new school, Lakeland Prep, for grades six through twelve. This school, coupled with Lakeland Elementary, the only school in the Lakeland School District currently, the proposed campus would provide Lakeland students with a municipal district for grades K-12.

The Lakeland School Board and administration said in a statement they were "disappointed" with the results of the vote.
