Memphis police arrested a woman Thursday evening after officers say she let a 10-year-old girl drive her car, while she sat drunk in the passenger's seat.

Laura Smith now sits behind bars, charged with DUI and child endangerment. Police say Smith also has a suspended license.

"You let a 10-year old get behind the wheel while you're intoxicated, that's ridiculous," said Ernise Perkins, the suspect's neighbor.

Friday, the 10-year-old girl's mother told WMC Action News 5's Jerry Askin that Smith is her child's godmother.

According to the affidavit, a witness says he saw the 10-year-old girl driving a Ford 500 pick up truck on South Third Street.

The witness, Josh Staten, says the girl pulled into the parking lot of AutoZone Park, and that's when he followed the truck. Once the car was parked, Staten says Smith then got out of the car and pepper sprayed him.

Officers say it was obvious Smith had been drinking. They say she was irate and yelled at them. Police say she even kicked a squad car after she was detained.

When police got there, the affidavit says Smith was in the front seat and the girl was in the passenger seat.

"It's very dangerous, they can endanger someone else' life. A 10-year-old? No, it's unacceptable," said Perkins.

The 10-year-old girl's mother was called to the scene and the child was released to her mother.
