SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) - A Shelby County deputy charged with driving drunk has been in trouble before.

Deputy John Checchia was arrested for DUI Wednesday morning after he fell asleep behind the wheel at a busy intersection.

However, Checcia has been arrested before for the same crime. He was also arrested March 20, accused of speeding and swerving his vehicle on the road. When police stopped him, he had a blood alcohol content of 0.139, which is almost double the legal limit.

"I want him treated the same as if it was me," said one Memphis resident.

Checchia is relieved of duty with pay.

Meanwhile, Shelby County residents are outraged.

One said, "It's sad to know we hired people to fulfill a responsibility and they continue to let us down over and over again."
