MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - "Snitches get stitches."  That's what some say on the street.

Now, one week after the drive-by murder of 15-year-old Cateria Stokes, Memphis police think that policy could be keeping them from solving the crime.

"I mean, just as nice as she could be," recalled Andrew Stokes, concerning his niece.  "And they just snuffed her life out."

Cateria Stokes was one of two girls killed in drive-by shootings last Friday.  But, unlike in the Kirsten Williams case, no arrests have been made.

"I just wish somebody would come forward - I know somebody knows something," said Stokes.

Stokes said Cateria's mother remains in shock by the callous crime.  Someone who fired dozens of shots at the home where Cateria was sleeping.

"I mean, just go and shoot up in the house 30 or 40 times?" asked Stokes.  "Don't know who's in there, don't care. You know, just heartless, like they don't have a soul."

Police believe silence can be a major obstacle in cases like this, thanks to a code among many potential witnesses not to "snitch."

"I mean, what citizen can tell you, 'If a homicide occurred in my community, where a child lost their life, that even if I know something I would not say anything?'" said MPD Director Toney Armstrong.  "That in itself is a crime to me."

Like 7-year-old Kirsten Williams, Cateria Stokes will be laid to rest this Saturday. Her family will pray arrests soon follow.

"They deserve to be caught, right now," said Stokes. "They need to be off the street. That's the way I feel."

Initially, police said this was a gang-related crime. That's something the Stokes family said they had no knowledge of.

Call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH, if you know anything about the shooting.
