Student suspended over Facebook photo of teacher

Student suspended over Facebook photo of teacher

WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC) - Parents at East Junior High in West Memphis were appalled after a student took a photo of her teacher.

“I'm shocked. I'm literally speechless," said one parent.

"That was a cruel thing to do," another added.

The photo shows the teacher lying on the classroom floor, and the student posted it on Facebook with the caption,"What's wrong with our teacher?"

Student Johnathan Nering said, "See what's wrong with him. Don't take a picture and make fun of him."

The school district said the teacher had a medical emergency and fainted. It appears most students did the right thing.

Alasia Perkins had just walked into the class.

"They said he dead. I ain't know what happened," she recalled. "I walked in and I asked him was he all right. He said he was fine."

The mother of the student who posted the photo posted her own message.

"They said they suspended my baby for posting a picture of her teacher asleep on the floor at the school," she wrote.

One student said, "I think the student shouldn't be having phones out at school because it's a rule."

School officials say the student was suspended for three days because she used her phone during class, posted the photo on Facebook and said the teacher was popping pills which school officials say is not true.

Most students seemed to understand it was breaking the rules and not very nice.

"If one of her family members passed out, she wouldn't want to have them on the news, I mean, Facebook," said student Keevon Quarrels.

The school said the teacher is expected to be okay.
