Memphis City Schools schedule informational meetings on proposed school mergers

Community members will have an opportunity to receive detailed information and voice their opinions at five informational meetings about the proposed merger of 10 Memphis City Schools. The district unveiled the recommendations last month which could save taxpayers $5.8 million in 2005-06, and $46.8 million over five years if the plan is approved by the Board of Education.

The multimillion-dollar cost-saving recommendations will merge Locke Elementary into Georgia Avenue Elementary; Orleans Elementary into Lincoln Elementary; Stafford Elementary into Cummings Elementary; Walker Elementary into Ford Road Elementary; and Dunn Elementary into Norris Elementary. The schools are at or below 50 percent capacity and has an enrollment of 300 students or less. Six key factors helped evaluate any potential mergers.

Those factors include building capacity and student population, optimal size for school buildings, neighborhood population and housing trends, proximity to neighboring school, educational profile, and physical history/condition of the building.

  • The informational meeting for residents in the Dunn and Norris Elementary Schools’ communities is scheduled for Tuesday, February 8 from 5:30 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Dunn Elementary School, located at 1500 Dunn Ave.
  • On Wednesday, February 9 from 5:30 7:30 p.m., the school system will hold an informational meeting for residents in the Walker and Ford Road Elementary Schools’ communities. The meeting will be held at Walker Elementary School, located at 322 King Rd.
