MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A 3- and 10-year-old boy were taken on a dangerous ride when someone stole the car they were sitting in.

A woman told police that she left her son and a boy she was babysitting inside her car as she ran inside her house to grab some water.

About 10 minutes later, the 10-year-old boy showed up to the Memphis Police Department traffic office on Union Avenue saying he had been kidnapped.

"It was an unbearable," Tajma Phillips, the 3-year-old's mother said. "Oh my God, indescribable pain just to consider the possibilities of what could have happened to them or might have happened to him."

The boy told police he had been punched in the face by the man who stole the car, then forced him out. A passerby picked him up and took him to the police station.

Police say Reginald Macklin is the man who punched the boy and made off with the car.

Macklin lives right across the street from Phillips. His mother said he has a mental illness and was running away because he was afraid for his life.

She said before this happened, a group of men attacked her son.

"The guys jumped on him for no reason at all," Macklin's mother said.

Surveillance video from where Macklin works shows a scuffle minutes before the carjacking.

The store owner said a group of boys harassed Macklin and tried to jump him.

No matter the circumstances, Macklin's mother and the carjacking victims' mother both said Macklin should pay for his actions.

"I do empathize with him," Phillips said. "But I just hope he gets the help that he needs so he doesn't do this to anyone else."

Reginald Macklin, 28, was arrested and is charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping. He's due in court June 12.

Neither of the boys were seriously injured.
