WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC) -

A man and a child died in a crash on I-55 at Mound City Road in West Memphis Thursday afternoon.

Investigators say three people in a pickup truck slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer.Inside the pickup was a man, woman, and baby in a car seat.

The man, identified as 22-year-old Charles Chad Wilcox Jr., and the baby died in the crash. The woman was taken to Regional Medical Center.

Witnesses say the tractor-trailer came to a stop because of construction ahead.

“It was really bad. It was something I've never seen before,” Larry Griffin said.

Griffin works at Ray's World Famous Bar-B-Que. He heard the crash impact from across the service road. He and his coworker ran to help.

“The lady was hollering. She was like, ‘Please help me. Can you get me out of here? Please. I can't breathe,'” Griffin recalled.

Griffin said the woman's body was crushed.

“Her leg must have broken. It was up against her head almost back in her nose where she could hardly breathe.”

Griffin and his coworker said they looked at the man and baby for signs of life, but both were already gone.

Griffin and his coworker then decided to comfort the woman until first responders arrived.

"She [Griffin's coworker] asked her [the woman] if she would just pray. So she just prayed with her the whole time she was there, held her hand and helped her calm down."
