MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The FedEx St. Jude Classic is underway at TPC Southwind, and it's going smoothly thanks to a very special group of people.

The best and brightest stars in the world of golf took to the course Thursday, but without the help of an army of volunteers, none of it would be possible.

Around 19,000 people spent time clearing a path for players, picking up trash, and keeping the crowd quiet.

"It's just a sense of giving back to the community and being involved in any aspect of St. Jude. I mean, look at what they do worldwide," volunteer Jill Poley said.

Poley is in his fifth year as a volunteer at the Memphis golf tournament. Practice range co-captain Chris Ford is in his 14th year.

"We make sure all of these coolers are full back up to the top. With all of these buckets we make sure there is ice and drinks and things full for the golfers," Ford said.

Then there's Bob Winn, a man who's on his 41st year of volunteering.

"It's just all the volunteers in here. This is their way to say we're a part of this; we're a part of this fight. It's our way to give back to St. Jude."
