MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Hot weather took the headlines during the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

But professional golfers are used to being out in the heat, so they had no problems posting even hotter scores.

Phil Mickelson jumped out to an early lead with four birdies on the front nine, but he struggled on the back nine and finished the day two under.

"It's a golf course you're not going to go really low on, and if you play super well you can go 5, 6, 7 under par, but good 3, 4, 5 under is really what you're looking for," Mickelson said.

Greg Owen, Ryan Palmer, and Brooks Koepka will start Friday in the front of the pack. All three finished the day at six under.

"When you're able to put it in the center of the green and give yourself uphill putts, it makes this course a lot easier. And hitting the fairway helps a lot," Koepka said.

Memphian and The Big Break finalist Clay Myers struggled in his first PGA Tour event. He shot 81, leaving himself 11 over and 17 shots off the lead.

"Overall it wasn't my best round," Myers said. "But I played with two great competitors, and it's just fun to be out here. I'm enjoying it all."
