A neighbor alerted a Memphis mother and her six children that their house was on fire Friday afternoon.

"I hate to think what could have happened," Kajuana Newson said. "Because it was pretty bad."

Newson's house on Tahiti Lane was one of two houses that caught fire Friday.

"If I wouldn't have come up there man, someone probably would have been dead," neighbor Louis Graham Jr. said.

Graham sprang into action when he saw the fire spread from one house to the Newson house.

"I went across the street and knocked on the door and stuff, beat on the windows, and nobody came to the door," recalled Graham. "So, I ran and kicked in the door."

Graham said the mailman also helped him alert the family inside.

Once inside the family told him there was a baby in the back room.

"So, I went and got the baby and jumped off the porch," Graham said.

"I'm very thankful. Thank God for them," said Newson. "That he did bang on the door and let us know what was going on, cause we had no idea."

The other home, where the fire actually started, suffered the most damage. Three children were inside when the fire started. They all got out safely.

"I really didn't think about my safety," Graham said. "I was just thinking about other people; that's just how I am."

Sadly, a dog died in the fire.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
