MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - For many years, basketball has been a game that brings many people together. Even in the summer, this phrase still rings true.

The 24th annual Shelby County Metro basketball and awareness clinic began this week at Northside High School.

Students, both boys and girls, came in by the hundreds to enjoy and experience the camp.

The mentors are hoping to make a positive impact on the children.

"I think the value of teamwork, the value of hard work, the value of being a part of something greater than yourself is huge," Superintendent Dorsey Hopson said.

Today, Northside students got to enjoy lots of entertainment and received a big surprise.

Some lucky campers got the chance to play a game against Superintendent Dorsey Hopson, our own Andrew Douglas, and Thaddeus Young of the Brooklyn Nets.

Andrew represented WMC Action News 5 well on the court. Of course, it helped to have an NBA starter on the team.

The camp is free and travels across Memphis and the Shelby County school district. It's going to travel to Overton High School next week.
