TUPELO, MS (WMC) - A Byhalia, MS 10-year-old died after a fallen tree limb hit him in the head during a baseball tournament in Tupelo, MS.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. Saturday.

According to the Tupelo Parks and Recreation Director Alex Farned, players were evacuating the field during a storm when the tree limb snapped, hitting 10-year-old Lane Rodgers in the back of the head.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene, and took the boy to North Mississippi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Lane loved playing baseball and on Saturday, his team was playing in a tournament at Ballard Park in Tupelo. His grandfather said things were great until it started to rain.

Terry Rodgers says his grandson and several teammates were running for cover, and when they got near a huge tree, the tragedy struck.

“A tree limb blew out the top of the tree and it hit him in the back of the head and knocked him to the ground,” he said. “You know, if he would have been a second or two behind or a second or two ahead of it, it wouldn't have happened. Just being at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

He says his grandson was into every sport, from dirt bikes to basketball to baseball. He had goals of playing for Ole Miss.

“He was just a good child. Never gave anybody a minute's trouble,” Rodgers said. “We're still in shock. We just don't understand why. God has a purpose and we will find out one day. We're all just in total shock and can't believe what's happened.”

The city of Tupelo is likewise mourning.

"The city of Tupelo asks for your thoughts and prayers during this time," said Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton.

The baseball tournament has been canceled at this time.

Monday, family and friends gathered at Ballard Park to hold a vigil in Lane's memory.

His funeral is set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Byhalia.

Family members have started a memorial fund in Lane's honor. Please send donations to:
