There is a new proposal to build a trash dump next to a Frayser elementary school.

While parents are concerned for the safety and health of their children, the owners of the property say there should not be a problem.

The two locations are separated by 455 yards, which some neighbors believe is too close for comfort.

“I think it is very dangerous, very dangerous,” said Deloris Marble, a Frayser grandmother. “I'm not good with that at all, because I have grandkids over here every day. You know, kids do walk back and forth to school here every day.”

The Memphis Wrecking Company is overlooking the project. They said the proposed plan is only an expansion on their existing dumping site and there will be no toxic waste.

The company said there will be no smell or dangers to the surrounding properties.

Some community members, however, said it is more than health risks that bother them.

“I mean, just imagine a child coming to school [and] looking out the window. He or she sees a bunch of trash, you know, across the street from the school,” Shelby County School Board Member Stephanie Love said. “We have all decided to come together, and we're going to go to the county commission, to the city council and then they'll know ‘No,' it's not up for debate. It's not an option.'”

The Memphis Wrecking Company said their only client is the city of Memphis.

Primarily, blight demolition debris will be dumped. They also say it is a temporary plan.

The proposal is scheduled for consideration July 9 before the Memphis and Shelby County Land Use Control Board.
