MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Parents and children attended a community meeting to learn how to interact with local law enforcement at New Hope Missionary Baptist
Church in Orange Mound.

Church and community leaders say the meeting became a reality because of recent events dealing with law enforcement across the nation.

This meeting is just one in a series on Family Life being sponsored by Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell.

"Just trying to teach them what they need to know as far as how to communicate appropriately," Youth Director Derrick Flake said.

A Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy was on hand to answer questions from youth participants.

"You have to respect them, because in situations like that they do have the upper hand," Taylor Flake said.

A few tips for children dealing with Law Enforcement included following instructions, keeping hands in plain view, and remembering
officers and deputies are ordinary people who are relatable.
"Don't just reach like you're grabbing a weapon, but put your hands up," participant James Ayers said.
The next meeting in this series is on Emergency Preparedness and will be held on Wednesday June 24th.
