MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The family of a young Memphis woman raped last year is now breathing a sigh of relief.

Investigators said a rape kit helped them identify Rickey Boyd, 33, as the man who brutally raped a young woman in May 2014.

"It could've been me, my nieces, or anyone," Erma Anderson said. "I'm so glad [Boyd has been arrested]. God knows that's a blessing."

Police said 13 months before Boyd's arrest a witness heard a woman screaming in the woods near Willie Mitchell Boulevard and Olive Road in South Memphis.

The victim was partially clothed and bleeding from her mouth when officers arrived on scene.

Police said Boyd shoved a piece of a stick 5 inches into the woman's mouth. The stick passed under her tongue, cutting it and her throat.

DNA gathered from the attack matched Boyd's DNA.

Boyd is charged with aggravated rape and attempted first-degree murder. His bond is set at $350,000.

"I'm now relieved that they got him, and maybe they'll keep him in there and not never let him out," Anderson said.
