Mid-South under heat advisory

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - It's the first day of summer and the summertime heat is already settling in. Most of our area is under a heat advisory Sunday and Monday afternoon, and that advisory will likely be extended through at least Wednesday. Due to southerly winds pumping in warm, humid air and abundant sunshine, we have the perfect set-up for a scorching week. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s and when you factor in the humidity, it FEELS more like 105 degrees and up. This will mark our longest stretch of triple digit heat index values of the year so far.

It's Father's Day and a Sunday, so many people will be trying to spend some time outdoors. You should also slather on the sunscreen and wear light-colored loose clothing today. I highly recommend trying to limit your time in the direct sunlight and taking breaks from the heat. With heat index values up to 105 degrees, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are possible. Drink plenty of water to replace what you're sweating out. Sweating is your body's way of cooling itself, and in high humidity it's harder for your sweat to evaporate.

Some symptoms of heat exhaustion are confusion, fainting, dizziness and nausea. If you stop sweating or these symptoms intensify, you may be suffering from heat stroke and need to call 911 immediately.

Happy Father's Day! Try to stay cool and hydrated during the next few days. Please check on your friends and neighbors!
