The AutoZone Liberty Bowl has honored Dick Vitale with the Distinguished Citizens Award.
Dickie V, one of college basketball's top basketball analysts and pediatric cancer advocate, was honored at the AutoZone Liberty Bowl Golf Classic kick-off event benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Vitale joins a long list of prestigious winners, including Fred Smith, Lou Holtz, Paul “Bear" Bryant, and many more.
In addition to his work at ESPN, Dickie is on the Board of Directors of The V Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to finding a cure for cancer.
His own gala has raised over $15.1 million to fight pediatric cancer.
Vitale has been elected into 13 different Halls of Fame for both his work in basketball and his philanthropic work.
Memphis Tigers basketball coach Josh Pastner received some high praise from Dickie V at the event.
He said, “You know, he came into a tough situation with all the wins that were compiled here prior with John Calipari, and it puts a lot of pressure on a young guy like him, and I think he handled himself well," Vitale said. "He's proud to be here. I'm hoping that the guy really gets it done. You want to root for good people and he's a good good guy."
