The stifling sizzle of summer arrived right on cue.

About 50 people gathered at the Orange Mound Community Senior Center in an effort to cool off Monday. The AC blasted as guests enjoyed refreshing snacks like ice cream.

"I'm addicted to ice cream anyway," said Memphian Anna Withers. "So, it cools you down from the inside out."

WMC Action News 5's Kym Clark and Kontji Anthony helped serve the sweet treats to seniors as they tried to beat the heat.

"We're in an air conditioned building, and when we leave here I go home and I am still under the air," Withers added.

But, some residents are not so lucky. Many people will be outside this summer, staying active and keeping busy. Beware, these temperatures are intense.

WMC Action News 5's Andrew Kozak warns that people susceptible to heat-related illnesses and people with a history of heart disease or high blood pressure should avoid the heat for long periods of time. He added that age is also a risk factor.

Drink plenty of water, and take breaks from the heat if possible.
