SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

Shelby County taxpayers believe a $6 million surplus from last year's budget should be used to benefit the county.

"Anything having to do with public safety would be good," suggested taxpayer Sherry Kreher.

The County Commission met Monday to discuss ways to use the 2016 budget and the surplus from last year's budget. Last year, the commission approved a $1.3 billion operating budget.

"I'd like to see us reduce the tax rate," said County Commissioner Terry Roland. "Try to keep people in Shelby County."

Roland proposes a one cent tax decrease, along with funding for non-profits and the Shelby County Sheriff's budget.

Taxpayers say they just want county officials to use the money responsibly. They're hoping the new budget will address needs across the county.

"There's sometimes a lot of wasted things," said Kreher. "Sometimes, they're not really spending money on what one area needs or trying to see what could be good for everyone."

Though the operating budget failed at the county commission meeting Monday, Commissioner Van Turner asked for a special meeting to discuss the matter further.

The commissioners will meet again to discuss the operating budget, the Shelby County Schools budget, and funds for non-profits.
