SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

The Mid-South will continue to experience hot and humid weather well into Wednesday evening.

National Weather Service extended a heat advisory until at least 7 p.m. Wednesday. It warned that afternoon temperatures will reach the mid-90s with a heat index over 105 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

Since overnight lows will only reach the 70s, NWS said those temperatures will not provide much relief.

NWS warned that outdoor conditions increase the chance for heat-related illnesses. Officials suggested that you drink lots of fluid, stay in air-conditioned areas if possible, keep out of the sun for extended periods of time and check on relatives and neighbors.

The city implemented heat protocols for Tuesday with the heat index expected to be at least 105 for approximately three hours.

During this time, citizens are urged to escape the temperatures by visiting Memphis libraries, community centers or senior centers. If citizens need a ride to one of those facilities, they can call the Mayor's Citizens Service Center at 576-6500.

Additional after-hours or overnight shelters may be added as needed.
