MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The man accused of hiring a hitman and poisoning his wife can no longer practice law.

The Tennessee Supreme Court suspended Fred Auston Wortman III's law license because he "poses a threat of substantial harm to the public."

Wortman and his wife have been going through a divorce since 2014.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents arrested him on June 5th when agents said he tried to hire an undercover TBI agent to kill his wife.

Days later, Shelby County deputies indicted Wortman for a different attempt on his wife's life they said happened in January 2015.

With his license suspended, Wortman must stop representing his clients by July 23.

His next court hearing is set for July 9 in Fayette County.
