Two men went to jail after admitting to being part of a car hopping scheme in Shelby County.

Shelby County deputies said 18-year-olds Hunter Autry and Thomas Calhoun burglarized cars parked in driveways of at least six different homes in less than a week.

Both men walked up to randomly selected cars and tried to open the door. If it opened, they took everything inside. If it didn't, they moved on to the next car.

The car hopping crimes happened around Arlington and Lakeland in Shelby County, and deputies said each burglary resulted in thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Deputies found stolen items ranging from a pistol to an iPad in the homes of both men.

Deputies said the best way to make sure you don't become a victim of these car hopping crimes is to lock your car doors and never leave valuables in plain sight.
