Cat doused with cleaning agent dies, suspect in custody

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A Shelby County inmate now faces animal cruelty charges because of what investigators said he did while on work duty.

Joshua Hawkins was cleaning kennels at Memphis Animal Services for his work detail.

MAS administrators said surveillance video showed Hawkins spraying a dangerous chemical into a cat's cage.

Hawkins was supposed to be cleaning empty cages with the chemical, but MAS said he deliberately doused the 10-year-old cat with the toxic chemical.

The cat suffered severe chemical burns and later died.

Hawkins has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.
