Nike isn't a new corporation in Memphis, but its brand new distribution center in Raleigh is something to celebrate.

The $301 million expansion on New Frayser Boulevard is Nike's largest distribution center in the world.

"Big day for Memphis and Shelby County," said Governor Bill Haslam. "This is really one of the best known brands in the world."

Haslam, along with Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, welcomed the new facility, expected to bring as many as 400 new jobs to the area.

"We're grateful for the opportunity," Haslam added. "It means more jobs for Memphis and Shelby County, and a better stature for our entire state."

The neighborhoods of Raleigh and Frayser were equally thrilled with the news.

"I need a job myself, so it's cool, it's nice," said Raleigh resident Robert Jefferson.

The center could have an even larger impact on the city and the county.

In the Greater Memphis area, the unemployment rate dropped to 6.6 percent in May from 7.3 percent a year ago.

The expansion, known as Project Victory, will put Memphis on the map in terms of job recruitment.
