A man connected to a kidnapping at a Memphis Walmart is in the hospital facing a long list of charges after a police chase that ended with a crash in East Memphis.

The mother of Jermaine Gibbs said he is schizophrenic and mentally unstable. She said she does not feel her son is capable of kidnapping, or causing the multiple car crashes that he is accused of.

Gibbs faces charges of aggravated robbery, carjacking, aggravated kidnapping, and intentionally evading arrest.

Police said Gibbs kidnapped a woman at Walmart on Wednesday and forced her to take him to the ATM where she withdrew $200.

Friday, witnesses said Gibbs was in an accident where his car flipped. He then reportedly got out of the vehicle, stole a Mustang, and took police on a chase from North Memphis to East Memphis, where he again crashed.

Family members said Gibbs left the East Memphis crash site with police close behind him. They said they saw him jump into a drainage ditch in an effort to get away.

Gibbs was arrested not long after and taken to Regional One.

Family members said they were originally told Gibbs was bleeding inside his head, and he might not make it. Since then, they have not been allowed in the hospital. Because of his disability, the family said they think Gibbs' mother should be allowed to check on his well-being.

“I thought by law, if he has a disability, they are supposed to get in touch with me, but they didn't care,” Gibbs' mother said. “I just hate that he was in it. I wish he would have stopped and worked it out in court.”

A spokesperson from Regional One said Gibbs is currently in good condition.
