After a weekend robbery on Beale Street, Memphians are concerned yet again about their safety on the iconic street.

According to a police affidavit, two men were arrested and charged with beating a man and robbing him of almost $700 in cash just south of the Beale Street entertainment district.

"Obviously, I would recommend to anyone, don't go places without anybody else around," said Downtown Memphis Commission President Paul Morris. "The safest place to be would be on Beale Street."

Morris said crimes like this robbery are rarely related to what's happening each weekend on Beale Street.

"Beale Street this weekend was perfectly safe," Morris added. "We had a great weekend, with thousands of people on the street enjoying themselves, zero criminal incidents in the entertainment district."

Morris said his team hired a security company to patrol Beale Street with metal detecting wands on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer and on other busy weekends.

Additionally, Memphis police officers and cameras mounted overhead patrol the street.

"I live and work downtown," said Morris. "My wife and kids go around Beale Street all the time, but we don't go in back alleys at 2 a.m. with $200 in cash without any cameras and witnesses."

Police said some of the recent crime may be linked to more illegal activity such as drug buying and selling.
