DESOTO COUNTY, MS (WMC) - The DeSoto County Circuit clerk's office is where residents in that county go to get a marriage license.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage Friday, Kelly and Heather Harrison went to the DeSoto County clerk's office to get a marriage license. They were told no.

“We've been together longer than a lot of married couples I know. I don't know. It's sad. It's just sad and I'm nervous," Kelly Harrison said.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood reversed what he said on Friday, telling clerks they can go ahead and issue licenses.

DeSoto County and Tunica clerks said they had not gotten the word Monday.

Panola County clerks said same-sex couples have applied, but no licenses have been issued.

“I feel like they're dragging their feet and it's only a matter of days hopefully.” Harrison said.

Mississippi attorney Stan Little says the clerks will have to issue the licenses soon or face lawsuits.

“They may have some wiggle room to delay it longer until that order comes in the mail, but it is inevitable and it is the law of the land."
