Belly Button Challenge promotes unhealthy body image

(KARE) It has gone viral on the Chinese version of Twitter, Weibo. Now the belly button challenge is making its way to the United States.

Heather Gallivan, clinical director of the Melrose Center, which treats eating disorders, is very concerned.

"The premise is, if you can reach behind your back and reach your belly button, you are healthy or fit," Gallivan said. 

Gallivan asserts the belly button challenge promotes unhealthy body image. 

"Healthy bodies come in every shape and size, and being able to reach around your body and touch your belly button is really more a function of arm length and shoulder flexibility than an indicator of health," she said.

Gallivan is alerting parents because she believes kids know what's happening on social media more than parents do. This kind of social media pressure, she said, can lead to eating disorders.
