MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

DeSoto County circuit clerks confirmed they will begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Resident Taylor Marrs was one of many people at the courthouse Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm really excited," said Marrs. "It's a great thing that they are doing."

However, not everyone shares Marrs' opinion. Same-sex couples in Mississippi waited since Friday for the chance to apply for a marriage license.

The U.S. Supreme Court ordered on Friday that all 50 states recognize same-sex marriage. However, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said he refused to issue the licenses.

Hood reversed his decision Monday and told county clerks across the state to go ahead and issue licenses. DeSoto and Tunica County clerks said they hadn't heard from Hood on Monday and weren't giving licenses to same-sex couples.

But, that changed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, former Grenada County Circuit Clerk Linda Barnette resigned from her position because of the Supreme Court's decision, according to the Grenada Star.

While some residents said it's important that she did not compromise her beliefs, others felt that personal feelings should be kept separate from one's job.

"I think it's outrageous, but it's better that she resigned," said one DeSoto County resident.

Kelly and Heather Harrison went to the DeSoto County Clerk's Office to get a marriage license as soon as the U.S. Supreme Court made its ruling on Friday. They were told no.

Since Tuesday, DeSoto County clerks said that no same-sex couples have applied for a marriage license, but they are ready and waiting for the first couple to arrive.
