MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Mayor A C Wharton took the time to visit the Lausanne Collegiate School gym on Tuesday to show his support for Marc Gasol.

The gym is the home to a Grizzlies basketball summer camp. It's also where Marc Gasol played for the Lausanne Lynx from 2001 to 2003.

"Across this country, city leaders and citizens alike long for the type of authentic relationship with their sports figures that Memphis has with Marc Gasol," Wharton said. "The love we have for him has been reciprocated in any number of ways with his real commitment to serving others. We may not be able to brag and say he was born in Memphis [...], but there is no doubt that like so many other iconic personalities, Marc Gasol was made in Memphis. He carries the Memphis DNA of grit and grind, compassion for others and a strive for excellence in his heart."

Yesterday, Memphian Justin Timberlake teamed up with film director Craig Brewer to make a short film about Gasol.

Gasol becomes a free agent at 11:01 p.m. Tuesday.
