MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Tenants of a Midtown shopping center sweated it out after thieves raided rooftop air conditioning units. Surveillance video may turn up the heat
on the suspects.

"About $30,000 to replace everything that we need to replace," owner Todd Weddle said.

At least five air conditioning units on top of the shopping center at Madison Avenue and South McLean Boulevard were stripped of valuable copper.

People who saw the damaged air conditioning units said they were peeled open like soup cans.

"It looked to us like a hurricane had come through," Weddle said. "Then, we realized they were after the materials that were worth something."

Weddle filed a report with Memphis police Thursday as tenants like Atlas Men's Health tried to stay cool after noticing the air was not working.

"Had to make a run to the store and pick up some fans and try to keep it as comfortable as I possibly can until we can get this situation taken care of," owner Rob Booth said.

Surveillance video of a possible suspect casing the shopping center early Thursday morning may help investigators. A car can be seen minutes
later in a rear alleyway after the roof believed to have been raided.

"I don't know the motives of these guys other than to find something for nothing," Weddle said.

The repairmen who came to fix the damage said they'd seen a dip in this kind of theft thanks, in part, to stiffer laws regarding scrap metal. Weddle was left to look into installing razor wire, a gate, or maybe hiring a security guard.

"We'll have to do a few different things to get it where it's secure," Weddle said.

Anyone with information about the theft is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 901-528-CASH (2274), texting 'AWARD' to 274637 or visiting www.528cash.org.
