MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Over the past two years, extra security measures have been put in place to ensure safety at the Riverfront fireworks celebration.

Extra security will be in place on Mud Island. MPD and security officers will be stationed at Beale Street landing and Tom Lee Park as well.

Benny Lendermon, President of the Riverfront Corporation, said Riverside Drive and the Tom Lee Park parking lot will be closed.

"We got with the Memphis Police Department and we came up with a little different routine," Lendermon said.

Two years ago, during the Fireworks celebration, a gunman shot into a crowd of people and hit a 13-year-old in the leg. With the new security changes, organizers are hoping to prevent any violence.

"We are still planning on heading out there to enjoy the fireworks," said Jarah Best.

Best and her family plan on enjoying the celebrations, safely, as well.

"We haven't had any problems the years we have been going down there," Best added.

A Memphis Police Department spokesperson was not able to give WMC Action News 5 an exact number of officers who will be on patrol at the event, but did emphasize a large police presence will be present.
